History

One of the first planting schemes at Brocks Hill Country Park was the Oak Avenue also known to some as the 'Millennium Avenue'.  Over 63 trees of the species Quercus robur (Pedunculate Oak) were planted in March 1998. The sponsorship project was originally run through LOROS (Leicestershire Organisation for the Relief of Suffering), Leicester Mercury and Oadby & Wigston Borough Council and was advertised as being planted at Parklands Leisure Centre for the Martin Green Fund.

The Oak Avenue follows the line of the old driveway which led to Grange Farm, now the site of the Environment Centre, and runs through the ridge and furrow fields which are farmed under the Countryside Stewardship Scheme by a tenant farmer.

Management

After initial pruning to develop straight trunks, routine maintenance is carried out annually.  Wooden boxes protect the trees from cattle which graze the field from late spring to early autumn to maintain the pasture.
