Raising Awareness Around Domestic Abuse - 04/02/2010

Oadby and Wigston Domestic Abuse Publicity Forum

A domestic abuse publicity campaign is being held during the week of the 8 February 2010 and will be focussing on preventing re-offending and encouraging healthy relationships.

During Domestic Abuse Week in February this year members of the Oadby and Wigston Domestic Abuse forum will deliver stickers with the Domestic Abuse helpline number as well as fortune cookies containing positive statements related to healthy relationships, to hairdressers and beauticians across the borough. The intention behind this campaign is to make people aware about the type of behaviour that occurs within a respectful relationship.

We also want to make people aware that they have the right to report and receive support if they experience abuse of any kind.

We want to encourage local people who are interested, concerned and are willing to give their help and support to those who are, or may suffer from abuse, to contact and to join the publicity forum in Oadby and Wigston so we can continue our work in the borough.

There is clear evidence locally and nationally that the emotional, physical and sexual nature of domestic abuse means that it does have a significant impact on the health and well being of victims.

Domestic abuse can result in death, serious injury and chronic physical and mental health problems for all those affected. It may result in or be linked to depression, anxiety and self-harm, including substance misuse and suicide.

Children witnessing domestic abuse will also suffer from a range of psychological and emotional problems. They are sometimes hurt by accident during the course of a domestic assault. For some the impact is long term. The impact includes fear and anxiety, loss of confidence and self-esteem, depression and stress-related illness, difficulties with friends or in forming personal relationships as adults, sad or withdrawn, violent or aggressive towards a parent or other children, and problems at school.
