Valuation of Domestic Properties

Summary

This page contains information on how domestic properties are valued for Council Tax banding purposes.

How is my Property Valued?

Each dwelling is placed on a valuation list in one of eight valuation bands, ranging from A to H.

The band value is decided by the Valuation Office Agency|[external link], which is an executive agency of the Inland Revenue.

The Valuation Office Agency advises the us of the band value for each property, which enables us to issue Council Tax bills.

Appeals can be made against the valuation, but only on certain grounds, and within prescribed time limits.

Information contained in the Council Tax Valuation Guide, published by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister gives further details on the appeals process.
